Is Your Technology Gaslighting You?
The way we relate to technology looks a lot like the way people stay in relationships that aren’t good for them. Is technology gaslighting you?
I don’t think it’s because we’re naive. I think it’s because we want to believe.
It’s genuinely promising at first. It showed up when we needed it and said the words we’d been waiting to hear.
Because that’s exactly how seduction works.
The early promise is enough. Then leaving feels harder than staying. And somewhere along the way we started wondering if the problem was us.
Gaslighting — in its clinical definition — is a pattern of manipulation that causes someone to question their own perception of reality.
You know something is wrong.
You’re told you’re imagining it.
You try harder.
It still doesn’t work.
Eventually you stop questioning the relationship and start questioning yourself.
Is your tech toxic? Does it sound like technology might be gaslighting you?
Here Are 7 Signs It Might Be
Sign 01
It promised to make your life easier. You’ve never worked harder.
Every tool comes with a honeymoon phase. The onboarding is smooth, the demo is flawless, and the testimonials are glowing. What they don’t show you is the steep learning curve, the workarounds, the hours spent editing and fixing everything it got wrong. You didn’t get your time back. You got even more work managing the thing that was supposed to replace the job.
Sign 02
It assures you it will change for the better.
This is the oldest move in the book. Next time it will be better. The algorithm is changing soon. They’re rolling out a feature that will solve exactly that problem. Meanwhile you keep paying, keep waiting, keep hoping things will improve.
Sign 03
You did everything it asked and somehow it’s still your fault.
You took the course. You watched the tutorials. You hired the expert. You followed the strategy to the letter. And when it didn’t work, the answer was always the same: you must have missed a step. You must not have been consistent enough. You must not have given it enough time. The tool is never wrong. It’s all your fault.
Sign 04
You’ve lost track of what you actually sound like anymore.
It doesn’t happen all at once. It’s a caption here, a bio there, an email that you approved because it was good enough. And then one day you read something published under your name and you feel nothing — no recognition, no pride, no this is mine. Technology will always think it knows what’s best for you.
Sign 05
You should feel lucky to have it.
Here’s what makes technology different from a toxic partner: a toxic partner knows they’re manipulating you. Technology believes its own pitch. It has no capacity to conceive of a world where you wouldn’t want more access, more features, more integration into every corner of your business. The entitlement isn’t even personal. But it still does damage, either way.
Sign 06
It gives you just enough to keep you from leaving.
A viral post. A month of good reach. A feature that finally works the way you needed it to. Just enough to remind you what it could be. Just enough to make canceling feel like giving up right before the breakthrough. This is not generosity. This is retention strategy. And it works on all of us.
Sign 07
You’ve started wondering if the problem is you.
Gaslighting is successful when the person being manipulated stops questioning the relationship and starts questioning themselves.
If you have ever sat in front of a screen at midnight wondering why everyone else seems to be figuring this out, why the strategy isn’t working, or why you can’t seem to get it right?
The truth is that no one mentions how much the tools will take from you. And the people selling them know that. The omission is not an accident.
STOP BEING MANIPULATED
So What Can You Do About It?
You can’t always leave. You just have to stop letting it convince you that you’re nothing without it.
- Know the problem is NOT you. It never was.
- Stop waiting for that future update to be the one that finally works. It won’t be the last promise of change.
- Remember what you built belongs to you regardless of what any tool decides to do.
Build & Protect Your Business
What you’ve created is valuable. Don’t let technology diminish it.
Know who you are.
Know what you’re about.
Know your audience.
Build on this and your business can keep going when the algorithm changes, the platform pivots, or the AI gets replaced by whatever comes next.
Because that’s the thing about being in a relationship with a tool – you are the only one who can decide whether it’s worth it.
